Minimodels HO Suburban Electric Cars

A contract was placed with the Commonwealth Engineering Co. of Granville (Sydney) for 80 steel suburban cars (40 motor and 40 matching trailers). The carriages were also constructed of a lighter steel than the previous cars and were of a clean finish, with a greater use of welded fabrication - in particular there was an absence of rivets on side panels.

In May 1970, a contract was placed on Commonwealth Engineering for the supply of 53 painted, stainless steel double-deck non-air-conditioned suburban motor cars (numbered C3805 to 3857) to be matched with an equivalent number of the existing Tulloch double-deck trailer cars (in the range T4841, 4842 and 4845 to 4895) to form four-car double-deck sets. Mitsubishi motors and electrical equipment was chosen for these 53 cars -

In 1929, three parcel vans entered service. These were conversions from the Walsh Island Standard Cars. The Parcel Van service proved so popular that additional cars were added. They ran on the system as single cars and were fitted with two independent brake systems. Berg’s Minimodels has reproduced the Parcel Vans, in HO scale, in the following sets:-

In 1939, additional rolling stock was ordered from Tulloch Limited. This order was known as the 1940's and 1950's Tulloch Cars and comprised of:-

• 126 Motor Cars
• 129 Trailer Cars

Bergs's Minimodels has reproduced the Tulloch Cars, in HO scale.

The rapid growth and demand of the system necessitated a substantial increase in rolling stock. 340 Motor Cars and 248 Trailer Cars were ordered. These Motor Cars and Trailer Cars were constructed with steel bodies in lieu of wood.

The following companies built the new Steel Bodied Motor and Trailer Cars:-

• Leeds Forge of UK built 50 Motor Cars
• Clyde Engineering Sydney built 160 Motor Cars and 30 Trailer Cars
• Walsh Island Dockyard Newcastle built 88 Motor Cars and 260 Trailer Cars

This group of cars became known as Standard Cars. The Standard Cars operated on the system until 1992.
